Words From Our Community

Here's why some of your neighbors are voting YES on August 4 to implement the 1% sales tax.

On several occasions, I have been treated in the SBA Emergency Room. My children have also been treated there on occasion. We have never had to wait more than 30 or 45 minutes. The staff is caring and thorough.

Since 2024, my husband has been to the Emergency Department at Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital six times with breathing issues. Four of those times he was admitted as a patient, one time he was transferred to another hospital in Wichita, and the sixth time he was released with medication to come home. All six of these visits to the hospital were received by friendly, caring and concerned employees of the hospital. We were told with each visit exactly what tests were going to happen and after being given results, we were given the information about decisions to make to help him get better. The staff in the ER kept us informed to ease our anxiety. During the times he was admitted as a patient, the med/surg staff continued to be as caring and informative of his health issues to ease our concerns.

Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital is and always has been my first choice of care for myself and my family. My two children were born there, my four grandchildren were born there. The care that we have received over the years has been exemplary from the doctors to the nursing care. I have experienced larger hospitals with other family members and have witnessed less than adequate care. Those experiences only solidified that Susan B. Allen remains my first choice of hospitals.

You may not need that hospital today, but you, your wife, your friends, your children will need it tomorrow, and you should hope it’s there functioning and active for our whole community.

I’ve always thought the care provided was just incredible! I’ve been up there, and I know how good they are.

I have been a nurse for 23 years, and I choose to work at Susan B. Allen because of its commitment to serving our community. As a rural hospital, we provide care close to home for our friends, neighbors, and families. Every day, I see the difference local healthcare makes – whether it's caring for a newborn, helping a patient recover after surgery, or being there during a medical emergency. Susan B. Allen is more than just a hospital – it's a vital part of our community. As Chief Nursing Officer, I have the privilege of seeing the dedication of our caregivers every day. I am proud to work alongside a team that is dedicated to providing high-quality, compassionate care close to home, and I believe our community is stronger because of the services Susan B. Allen provides.

After coming straight out of residency and practicing in El Dorado for 38 years, I can think of no better place to live and practice medicine. As a board member, I can testify that passage of this sales tax is critical to the survival of SBA and our medical community. The physicians in El Dorado are intimately connected to our hospital. We rent office space from SBA, and some of us rent our information systems from SBA. We admit our patients to SBA. Our cancer patients are treated here. Our babies are born here. The labs that we depend on and the radiology services that we require are performed here. Our patient's surgeries happen here. Our patients' lives are dependent on our hospital. If our hospital were to go away, I fear that most of our doctors would go away as well. The life of our town rests on the shoulders of our hospital. Our medical community and our town are dependent on passage of this sales tax.
